About Us

"Strahan is a fiery Texas spirit, a killer guitar player & piano pounder and singer, as wild as the high plains from which he hails, and as cool as the hill country where he lives. He’s as real & strong as lightning, I swear, and I love being around him, to hear how he's going to knock me out next." ~Walt Wilkens, Producer, Singer/Songwriter

As if growing up in Lamesa, Texas, (population 9,422 from the 2010 census, located south of Lubbock on the Llano Estacado) is not bad enough, Jeff Strahan also studied and practiced law. But he returned to his roots as a third generation garage “bandanista” and is now a full time, axe wielding, keyboard slamming,Texas blues rocking musician. The world is better off on both accounts; we have one less lawyer to deal with and one more great musician to listen to. But we almost did not have this- he first had to beat a terminal illness and regain his strength to perform, tour, write, record and compete in the IBCs. His musical style swings on both sides of the border, with flaming hot Texas guitar licks sometimes with a Mexican influence.

Strahan’s music is southern rock, blues, folk and more all rolled into one. If the Marshall Tucker Band had come from Lubbock, Texas instead of South Carolina, they might have sounded a lot like this. From the blistering guitar to the laid back lyrics, the music oozes Texas and sounds mighty fine. If you are looking for some great blues influenced rock done up hot and spicy Texas-styled, you need look no further. And if you are a fan of big guitar solos and a band that can jam with the best of them, this will make your day.

"...Strahan has described his music as Red Dirt Blues - a passing reference to the Permian red beds that color the earth at the breaks of the Llano Estacado, but in his view, it's more an expression of the many different music styles that were marinating the high plains while he was growing up. Styles like Tejano, country (and western), rock, blues, Texas swing and all the fusions in between. It's a good mix and it's one of the reasons Texas music runs so deep.

It might be easy to characterize Strahan's music and his band as a blues rock band. And while that's accurate in a general sense, it's more useful to think of Strahan as a good time band. Wait, scratch that; a huge, kick-ass, great time band. He's having fun, the band's having fun, he loves what he's doing and if you can't hear that in his music, you might need a hearing aid.

In addition to Texas-quality musicianship, Strahan's music makes for pure joy-ride-style fun; think of a Saturday night bar packed with people ready to drink, dance and party. If you walk away from an evening with Strahan all cold quenched serious and shit, you might need a vacation."~

Veterans Day

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling. (from Wiki)

I never served in the military but I've had a lot of family members and close friends that have and some still do. When I was little, I entertained the idea of being a Navy Pilot because that is what my father, Lt. W.L. Strahan did and his stories of those experiences were mesmerizing. My eyesight was not good enough to be a pilot and I lost interest as I got older. However, I always felt attached to the military because of my dad. We shopped at the Air Force base commissary in Lubbock. Our our house was full of uniforms, medals, cuff links, hats, flight suits, oxygen mask, pictures of jets and carriers, even the sword that I thought was really cool. Here is a photo of my dad in uniform:

It's sad that this nation feels it cannot fully trust the motives of a President that declares war. It's sad that the bipartisan nature of our system allows those who are campaigning for office to question those in office for going to war. I find it almost impossible to believe that any human being would declare war, put our son's and daughter's lives at risk, for a cause that was not worthy. I don't believe anyone would sacrifice lives for oil. Guess I'm just naive that way. It seems to me that the one thing all politicians should agree on is whether a threat is such that we must risk the lives of our soldiers. We should be able to question why our country is considering war but once we are there, we should not criticize our leaders They certainly should not criticize each other. We should all stand united.

When it comes to war, we should stand as one nation behind our leaders and our military. We should be humble and understand that we are not privy to the intelligence and information supplied to our leaders. We cannot begin to understand what is really happening in the world. We cannot be the armchair quarterbacks of military matters.

United, however, we can hope and pray for a quick resolution of the conflict without loss of life. United, we can hope and pray that our leaders will bring our troops home as fast as possible. United, we can give soldiers a ticker tape parade and welcome home celebration that is fitting. It should be bigger than any Superbowl or World Series celebration. United, we can observe with reverence a moment of silence and a quiet breath of thanks for all who have died and will not return home. Most importantly, no matter what your political preferences are and no matter how opposed you are to a war, you should never demean the motive of the soldiers who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for this Country! Soldiers don't get paid much, they don't live luxuriously, they follow orders and they don't get near the appreciation they deserve.

Next time you see someone in uniform or someone wearing a veteran hat or vest, tell them THANKS. Say it sincerely! It will make you feel good and it's the least you could do for these people who preserve our way of life.

Happy Veterans Day. God Bless America.

Guess What?

September has been good to us. I have a freezer full of dove (only my possession limit Mr. Game Warden!) that I'm getting ready to make into Gumbo. I got to do a lot of fly fishing in Colorado. My family is all healthy and happy. Our tour of Colorado was great. The venues, crowds, people, weather, fishing, and scenery throughout Colorado were incredible. But I do love our new house here in Gruene and, I'm glad to be back home where it has now cooled off and been raining.

October in the Hill Country is amazing and we have a lot of cool shows lined up. Billy's Ice, Sealy Flats, Gruene Hall, etc. Check out www.jeffstrahan.com for the schedule. I don't want to regurgitate our show lineup here but suffice it to say that things are going good for the band.

Our Wayward Son album has been getting airplay across the country. We are competing with people like Lucinda Williams, Buddy Guy, Cody Canada, John Hiatt, Steve Earle and other biggies on the Americana chart. We held our own between 150 and 200 on the chart. Not bad for our first run at radio and for this little independent label from Texas, it was pretty damn good.

I'm working on material for the next album and Guess What? It's gonna be greasy and bluesy. I'm talking Ray Charles here. I feel like putting out some happy blues music and the songs are coming together real nice. So far I've got titles like "She Only Hates Me When She's Drunk", "I Think I'm Funny", "You Look Like I Could Use Another Drink" and others. Trying to keep it light and humorous.

We are gearing up for the TexMex Fandango and Blues Cruise in January 2012. You should join us as we venture to Honduras, Cozumel, and Belize. (cruise details) We'd also like to welcome our newest bass player-Jimmy Hartman. He was with "Devil's Hollow" before and is a great addition to our ever evolving lineup.

Speaking of bass players, on Sunday, Oct. 9, we are having a fundraiser/tribute to my good friend Jay Hataway who has been battling cancer for a while. Jay played bass with me for a couple of years and we have known each other since High School. He is a true legend and played with greats like Jessie Guitar Taylor. Join us in our salute to Jay. (details on website)

I'm done ranting for now. Thanks to everyone that supports live music and to all those who are involved in keeping it alive.

God Bless,

Jeff

Update

Well, been a while since I have written in this blog. We have been so busy promoting the lastest album that it's hard to keep up with everything. I've also been fishing a lot so maybe it's more of a priority thing.

Things with the Band are going great. We have had some really good shows lately at Billy's and Gruene Hall. We had a great time at the Aztec Blues Festival in New Mexico and the Tall City Blues Fest in Midland. The Wayward Son album is on the Americana charts and getting more airplay each week.

Getting ready to head out to Lubbock today for our first show at the Blue Light. Then over to one of my top two favorite venues, Sealy Flats in San Angelo. Can't wait to see our friends and homies. I've got the Texas Renegade boys, Tyson Carver on Mando and his twin brother Eli on bass for these shows and it will be a good time.

It's been a long hot summer with hardly any moisture so Lois and I have spent a lot of time at the coast. We started Kayak fishing and it's been a blast. I'm going hunting Labor Day weekend way out West Texas and Lois is headed to Florida to see the Grand baby and family.

After that we head up to Colorado and Wyoming for about three weeks. Looking forward to some cool weather and fly-fishing there.

I'm starting to put together some songs for my next album. Probably try to release a new project 1st part of next year. This album may be more country than any to date. I'm trying to keep it cheerful with more humor and less darkness.

Thanks for your continued support and interest keeping us alive. Hope to see you soon.

Cruise, News, and other things.

You need to check out texmexfandango.com for information on our upcoming cruise January 2012. We leave out of Galveston for Cozumel, Honduras, and Belize. The music lineup features Augie Meyers (Texas Tornadoes, Sir. Douglas Quartet, etc) T. Gozney Thornton (grammy nominated West Texas legend), Joe Forlini (lead guitar for Rusty Weir and now Jerry Jeff Walker) Cynthia Jordon (wrote Jose Cuervo), yours truly and more. Of course our hero Lois Lane will be there so what are you waiting for.

In order to secure a cabin on the same deck as the artists and other attendees, you need to get your deposit in. It's refundable if you can't go for some reason. All the information you need is here: http://texmexfandango.com/

Had a great Saturday night show at Billy's Ice. Thanks to everyone that showed their support. You guys are great and Billy's continues to really rock.

Hoping my new sound gear arrives today. We got the new QSC K12 powered mains with matching subs. Should sound beautiful in any setting.

Getting geared up for our Colorado Tour which starts next week. Rob Fulton, my usual bass player, is headed to Italy so we have enlisted the Carver twins, Eli and Tyson, from Texas Renegade to play on this tour. We've been rehearsing and it sounds great.

We sold out of Wayward Son CDs at CDBaby.com but should have it restocked this week. You can still purchase it on iTunes, Lone Star Music, Our Tracks and other online stores.

Thanks for everything. See you soon.
